What are people thinking? Cosmetic Disasters Await Tourists!

This is your face, your body , your eyes. Being in Michigan I have seen it for years people crossing the border for Lasik. Why? because it is cheaper. But what happens when problems occur? Your insurance doesn't cover you in another country. Those bills add up quickly to fix errors that occur elsewhere. Cheaper care is not usually better care!

Finally a spa treatment that you can rely on…

Finally a spa treatment that you can rely on…

For years, skin care products have touted the benefits of topical collagen – though not until now did this make sense! Javani™ collagen-infusion treatments are the first skin hydrating products available that deliver micronized, intact collagen that absorbs into the skin. The collagen remains in the skin, drawing in and holding moisture. Skin is loaded with moisture, fine lines diminished and texture smoothed and softened.

All natural, alcohol free and sure to not leave an oily residue on skin, Javani™ products can be used where maximum hydration of the skin is necessary. Javani™ products are also ideal following skin rejuvenating medispa treatments where moisture is lost from the process.

At ACCENTS, we offer Javani™ treatments as follows:

1- Javani UltraFacial: following a skin and spirit rejuvenating corrective facial, Javani gel is ultrasonically massaged into the skin to make fine lines disappear, improve skin texture and to add a soft, healthy glow.

2- Javani MicroFacial: hydrating the skin after a Microdermabrasion or chemical peel prevents dryness and roughness caused by the treatment and replenishes moisture lost to chemicals used to peel away dead skin cells.

3- Laser Skin Resurfacing: Pre-hydrating the treated areas assists the removal process and prevents excessive moisture loss caused by laser energy.

Unique Benefits:

  • Minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without the need for injectables – also reduces the signs of photoaging, including poor skin tone, rough texture, and dryness.
  • Javani can work with injectables or sub-dermal implants to erase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Javani is made of natural substances that are easy to recognize and are compatible with the human body. No other collagen-based product contains as much natural, micronized, intact collagen as Javani products.
  • Results are immediate and long-lasting with simple maintenance.
  • Javani can work in combination therapy with existing dermatological processes to treat a wide range of dermatological issues.

Botox to stop sweating?

Botox to stop sweating?
Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition known as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, which involves overactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body's temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body's normal requirements for cooling. This embarassing condition often effects young woman - like 17-year old Amanda of Macomb County, who d espite a surplus of remedies (including prescription-strength anti-perspirant) was unable to get adequate relief and continued to grow self-conscious.
Before visiting me, Dr. Mark Berkowitz the Medical Director of Accents Cosmetic Surgery and Medical Spa, Amanda had exhausted both the Internet and medical community looking for a solution. "I wanted to find a safe option and didn't want to worry about being embarrassed by something like wet spots on my clothing. It's hard enough with all the normal worries teenagers have," she explains.
Botox was the solution for Amanda. This extremely diluted and safe variation of the botulinum tonxin blocks the chemical signals from nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. Botox is able to stop sever seating with just a single treatment for about 6 months! And, Amanda isn't my only satisfied patient - we have patients from as far away as Kalamazoo and Mt. Pleasant that visit twice each year and no longer worry about excess perspiration.
Clinical studies show:
  • Patients treated with Botox are far more likely to achieve an effective response than those not treated. 57 out of 104 Botox treated patients achieved an effective response – compared to only 6 out of 108 treated without Botox - that's 55% vs. only 6%.
  • Patients treated with Botox are far more likely to achieve a great reduction in sweating compared to the number of patients who benefit from other agents. 84 out of 104 Botox treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating – compared to only 44 out of 108 treated with other agents (41%).

Within just a few weeks of a single, quick, in-office Botox treatment, patients are likely to notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating. The effects of Botox will gradually wear off. It is not a cure – but excess sweating is likely to be quashed for about 6 months before re-treatment may be needed. Botox for excess underarm perspiration is often a covered insurance benefit – and, Allergan (the manufacturer of Botox) does offer assistance to those without insurance or are able to demonstrate financial need. My insurance liaison's available to verify benefits.

Men Embrace Botox Restylane Fotofacials in Detroit

Michigan has been hit very hard by lay offs, unemployment and a weakening job market. This has not stopped both women and men from embracing minimally invasive procedures at Accents Medical Spa in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Dr. Berkowitz has noted an increase in both sexes requesting minimally invasive procedures like Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, and Fotofacials. In order to keep up with the job market and compete with new college graduates more men and women are seeking "no down time" procedures. Dr. Berkowitz, a board certified physician who is fellowship trained, is one of only a handful of physicians who performs the injections himself.

Clients enjoy the fact that Dr. Berkowitz cares enough about their outcome that he personally performs the injections. Dr. Berkowitz appreciates the fact that his clients do not always have a full week or two of down time nor do they want anyone to know that they have had a rejuvenating procedure. Dr. Berkowitz's goal is a natural change that makes patients look refreshed and not plastic.

Michigan Patients Thrilled by Sculptra

Dr. Berkowitz, the medical director, of Accents Medical Spa in Sterling Heights, Michigan has successfully been using Sculptra to rejuvenate his patients. Like an artist he is able to use this long lasting filler to sculpt new cheeks, eyelids, jawlines, and lips. Word of mouth is spreading throuhgout Detroit suburbs about his Liquid Face Lift. Dr. Berkowitz has been using fillers like Sculptra, Restylane and Radiesse and Botox Cosmetic for over 13 years and is one of the most experienced injectors nationally. Dr. Berkowitz performs all of the injections himself unlike other spas where it may not be performed by the doctor.

What It Does

Sculptra® is an injectable product that restores and corrects the signs of facial fat loss by replacing lost volume. Sculptra® provides an increase in skin thickness, helping to create a more natural facial appearance in those with facial lipoatrophy.

Sculptra® is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material. Sculptra® is not made from human or animal sources and does not require a skin test. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for many years in surgical products. The effects are long-lasting; they were shown in a clinical study to last for up to 2 years after the first treatment session.

Fractional Skin Treatment

A New Revolution in Fractional Aesthetics

Offer your patients the Ultimate Non-Ablative Fractional Solution

Only the Matrix IR™ elōs™ fractional applicator combines Fractional Optical Energy with Bi-Polar Radio Frequency (RF) to produce deep dermal heating to effectively treat wrinkles. Powered by elōs Technology, Matrix IR Fractional Treatment delivers industry-leading results that your patients will love.

"The Matrix IR is a powerful tool for wrinkles - one of the most difficult problems for aesthetic treatment. With the Matrix IR applicator, we are able to achieve deep, predictable dermatological results."

~ Vince Afsahi, M.D.

How it works

The Matrix IR applicator uses a proprietary synergy of light and conducted Bi-Polar RF to create the deep thermal heating needed to both shrink and generate new collagen while protecting the epidermis.

Combining the deep penetration of a diode laser and RF with intense epidermal cooling allows thermal energies to penetrate deeper into the dermis. This creates a unique thermal profile that is optimal for effective wrinkle treatment yet gentle to the epidermis.

Selective heating within matrix thermal bands allows surrounding tissue to remain undamaged. This fractional tissue-sparing promotes quicker healing and minimizes downtime.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery and Lasik

As an Oculofacial Specialist I am often asked which procedure should be performed first, laser eyelid (lift) surgery or LASIK (vision enhancement). Many times patients will have Lasik see themselves more clearly and then recognize that their eyelids have become tired and baggy looking!

It can truly be performed in any order but the timing changes depending upon which you have first. If you have laser eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) first, I would have you wait a minimum of 6 weeks prior to LASIK. If you have LASIK first I would have you wait 6 months before the eyelid surgery. This is because the LASIK changes your cornea(the clear part of your eye) and pressure on it by shields that protect the eye could have an impact on your cornea early on. Also LASIK can change your tear production and I want to make sure this is normal and healthy prior to surgery. Unfortunately many general and facial plastic surgeons do not check patients' tear production prior to surgery. This simple test, Schirmer test, can have a big impact on your happiness after eyelid surgery. For if you have low tear production more conservative eyelid surgery or no surgery at all should be performed.
